Goals / Objectives
1.)The objective of this project is to continue to develop and upgrade a remote sensing, geographic information system, global position system, and image processing capability at NCSU for visual and digital analyses of airborne and satellite data and integration with conventional map form and tabular data: and 2.) continued development of applications of remote sensing technology for integrated natural resource and environmental concerns.
Project Methods
Continued development of the described capability will be accomplished by upgrading the existing interactive hardware and developing necessary software for image analysis and data integration subject to availability of funds. The applications projects will be composed of using Landsat MSS-TM, Mission to Plant Earth Data, and other airborne and spaceborne data as they become available and appropriate for a variety of resource related projects.

Our research continues to focus on natural resources and environmental applications of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems.

Impacts
Facilitating and conducting reoinformatics research and training at NCSU. We have facilitated many research projects for the faculty and students from many departments and across many disciplines. We have trained a large number of students. Several Ph.D. dissertations and many Masters theses were conducted utilizing the facilities developed on this project. Many publications were published and public services were provided.

Progress 01/01/99 to 12/31/99

Outputs
The objectives are to continue to develop state-of-the-art image processing and remote sensing, and GIS capabilities. The results are being implemented in training and research projects involved in spatial information technology. The output is in the form of research results and software and hardware. Projects during this period with Khorram as the PI include: 1)NOAA/C-CAP in land cover inventory and change detection of coastal NC using landsat thematic mapper data; 2)The NOAA/C-CAP project has been co-funded by NOAA on the interpretation of land cover and development of GIS for evaluating ecosystem health in the Chesapeake Bay region; and 4) NASA fellowship for one of Khorram's graduate students for his Ph.D. education and remote sensing emphasis. Work has continued with the development of implementation plans for GIS on forest resource operations that cannot support stand alone computer work-stations. Progress continues to be made on projects with Dr. Devine as PI with the National Park Service in implementing personal computer mapping packages that can be operated with limits.
